And I'll just be honest that the reason Demon's Souls was loved was because it too was a hot mess in a way. Vagrant Story is like Demon's Souls if Demon's Souls had failed to resonate with gamers. I've yet to see many JRPGs do boss fights nearly as well until Demon's Souls and Dark Souls came along. I've yet to see a game embrace depth like the weapon crafting system. I've yet to see another game incorporate locational damage as well as Vagrant Story has. Its not really talked about because there isn't much to talk about in reference to modern game design. Unfortunately, it met with a fairly hostile response so I'm not sure if the game ever would have found it's audience either way. As it is it's just an amazing PS1 game that most people never played or remember.Īll of that said, Final Fantasy XII does borrow A LOT from Vagrant Story since Yasumi Masuno (the mind behind Vagrant Story) also directed and produced that game as well. I really feel that if Vagrant Story had instead been a launch PS2 title it would be hailed as one of the best games ever. Alpha Protocol would probably be the closest to such a game this generation though it is heavily flawed and buggy whereas Vagrant Story was just too complex and way before it's time. Even the final boss is more a tragic figure than one that you come to loath in any way.Īnd then you couple that story (and beautiful prose!) with a very complex stat system that requires a lot of constant balance and forethought (you could end up with a character who couldn't win by the time you left the Catacombs) and you have a recipe for a game that will be loved by critics (as Vagrant Story was) and ignored by actual players because it was largely too dense for many of the casual JRPG fans to get into.Īnd because the game was not a commercial success, there is no reason for industry peers to follow it's example. In fact, nothing is exactly as it first appears to be. The villains were not really traditional villains and the protagonist was not necessarily a good person. It is very politically driven with very grey characters of questionable repute. Vagrant Story was, much like Final Fantasy Tactics, a hard story to get into. In that company, a largely short, complicated new IP from Squaresoft was bound to be largely overlooked in favor of it's more genre popular competition. Final Fantasy was very much at it's peak at that time and Chrono Cross was the sequel to one of the most beloved JRPGs of all time. this rule is about all Units that are in this beautiful game include bosses. As someone who loves the game dearly, it comes down to the fact that it was released at the very tail end for a then dying PS1 console.įurthermore, in that very same year of it's release it was overshadowed by Final Fantasy IX and Chrono Cross which also released that year. you should get to know about what boss you are fighting, with what element that boss damage, and what element is it's weakness, then pick the right armour to avoid boss damage and the right weapon to defeat that boss. The most important thing in this game is the elemental rules. you should finish the game or at least proceed till last boss, then you should go to farm and upgrade your weapons and armours. but you have no idea about bunch of names if I write them here. for example dagger, if you combine two daggers together you have a chance to upgrade your dagger, yes of course it's not based on random, it will follow a very beautiful rule. We have many weapon and armour class in this lovely game. That was about material, now about the quality of the tool itself. you can find better performance from two same weapon with different material, for example: D>S>H>I>B>W the first is Leather represented with "L", Wood with "W", Bronze with "B", Iron with "I", Hagane with "H", Silver with "S" and finally Damascus with "D". if you have no idea about materials I have to say there are different type of materials that weapons and armours can be found during the game. The whole crafting is there to give you the ultimate material in both weapon and armour to defeat the last boss with ease beside it with crafting you can get the ultimate type of both weapon and armour available in this game.
